Today is our 32nd wedding anniversary! Whoohoo! We had first thought that we would go out for a restaurant meal at the Keg or similar. Instead, we decided to grill our favorite meal — Steak.
Today’s Aglianico Pick
Vieni Aglianico is a red wine produced by Vieni Estate Winery. They offer a large catalog of unique wines, ranging from interesting reds and roses to refreshing whites and bubbles. In fact, they specialize in sparkling wines. They make Grappa and some distilled spirits as well. Rick liked this one during his tasting so we bought it. A bit spendy for us coming in at $30.
Our impressions of this wine
Ada— My first sip and I knew this was very good. In fact I commented to Rick that I could sip this one without food. Lots of cherry flavours and the finish was perfectly satisfying. When I’m rich I will buy a crate.
Rick— I chilled this bottle a little bit but not too much as I have read that red wines should be served at around 15-20°C. This wine was delicious and smooth with lots of cherry flavours. Was it worht the price? I guess so. I’ve had wines half the price that are just as good though. The reason I gave this wine 3 stars is becase both Ada & I had headaches that night sleeping. Odd.
Vieni Aglianico Taste Profile
Vieni Aglianico is often described as having flavors of dark fruit, such as black cherry and blackberry, as well as earthy and spicy notes, such as leather, tobacco, and black pepper. Some versions of Vieni Aglianico may also have hints of chocolate or coffee.
Vieni Aglianico is a wine that is often compared to other full-bodied reds such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, and it is known for its aging potential. While it can be enjoyed when young, many wine enthusiasts prefer to age Vieni Aglianico for several years in order to allow its flavors and tannins to fully develop. Overall, this wine is a bold and intense choice that pairs well with hearty dishes and strong cheeses.

From their website:
As the Greeks, seeking new lands and opportunities, first settled in Italy, they brought with them what we now call Vitis Ellenica, which according to Virgil became the principal grape of Falernian wine – the finest of all the wines of Rome. Eventually, it became known as the Greek grape – Aglianico.
And so the journey continues… once settled in Canada, we insisted on bringing the ancient Aglianico from the volcanic slopes of Italy to the rolling hills of the Vinemount Ridge in the heart of the Niagara Peninsula.
